Beim ersten Eindruck fällt zunächst auf, dass das Hugyfot HFN D70 für die Nikon D70 sehr kompakt wirkt, obwohl es geringfügig größer als das Subal D70 Gehäuse ist. Die Kamera lässt sich ohne Probleme einsetzen und passt perfekt in das robust wirkende Gehäuse, welches auch äußerlich gefällt. Von Beginn an funktionierte alles tadellos, es waren keine Nachjustierungen erforderlich. Obwohl das Gehäuse von der belgischen Firma Greenforce, welche die Marke Hugyfot von René Hugenschmidt übernommen hat, komplett neu entwickelt wurde, hat man doch ein typisches Hugy Gehäuse in der Hand.
Das Verschlusssystem ist recht simpel: zwei Schrauben. Es macht einen sicheren Eindruck, allerdings gestaltet sich das schnelle Öffnen etwas umständlich.Alle Kamerafunktionen sind von außen bedienbar. Nur der MF-AF Schalter besitzt keine Durchführung. Diese kann auch nicht auf Wunsch und gegen Aufpreis nachträglich installiert werden.
Für den Objektivwechsel reicht es, den Frontport zu entfernen, die Kamera muss nicht entnommen werden. Zum Wechsel von Objektiven mit installiertem Zoomzahnring ist ein entsprechendes Werkzeug erforderlich.
Die Durchführung für das Programmwahlrad wurde auf der Gehäuserückseite platziert. Ein Vergrößerungsfenster auf der Gehäuseoberseite erlaubt den Blick auf das Programmwahlrad, so dass die aktuelle Stellung jederzeit ablesbar ist.
Für den Ein-/Ausschalter wurde eine Hebeldurchführung gewählt. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass man vor dem Einbau den Schalter an der Kamera auf ‚ON’ stellt und auch die Durchführung entsprechend ausrichtet.
Das vordere Wahlrad ist leider mit den Fingern nicht einfach bedienbar. Dies gestaltet sich besonders mit Handschuhen sehr unkomfortabel und wird zu einem Problem, wenn die Situation ein schnelles und häufiges Ändern der Blende (bzw. Verschlusszeit) erfordert. Dagegen ist das hintere Einstellrad sehr gut zugänglich, das Rad ist groß genug und so positioniert, dass es sich mit dem Daumen sehr gut bedienen lässt.
Die Betätigung des Auslösers bereitet wahre Freude. Die Durchführung vermittelt ein genaues Gefühl über die Hebelkraft/-weg auf den Auslöser und erlaubt sehr komfortables Arbeiten. Alle weiteren Durchführung (Druckknöpfe) sind präzise angeordnet, arbeiten einwandfrei und erlauben die problemlose Bedienung der Kamera Unterwasser.
Das hintere Displayfenster bietet einen abgeschatteten Einblick auf den Monitor und erlaubt eine leichte Bewertung der Bildresultate am Monitor.
Zurzeit wird von Hugyfot keine Vergrößerungs-/Sportsuchergehäuseoptik angeboten. Für meine Bedürfnisse liefert die simple Gehäuseoptik ein nicht ausreichend großes Sucherbild (Ich benötige eine Sehhilfe und meine Augen wollen leider nicht mehr so wie ich es gerne hätte). Ich habe bei Hugyfot per email gefragt, ob es eine Vergrößerungsoptik geben wird. Die Antwort war „ja, wird es in der Zukunft geben“. Aber niemand weiß, wann das sein wird.
Das Gehäuse kann wahlweise mit ein oder zwei Blitzbuchsen bestellt werden (Parallelverkabelung zum Blitzschuh an der Kamera). Entsprechend werden wahlweise auch ein oder zwei Blitzarmbefestigungen angeboten. Serienmäßig ist zwar ein Kugelkopf auf der Gehäuseoberseite vorhanden, dieser ist meiner Meinung nach aber nur für eine Pilotlampe oder Ähnliches geeignet. Zur Aufnahme eines Blitzarmes halte ich den Kugelkopf (welcher übrigens ULCS Größe hat) für unpassend.
Die Front- und Domeports besitzen Acrylglas, welches in einer Metallfassung eingelassen ist. Zur Aufnahme am Gehäuse wird ein O-Ring gedichtetes Bajonett verwendet. Das Anbringen der Ports gestaltet sich einfach.
Der Leckwarner meldet Wassereinbruch akustisch und visuell. Allerdings ist die Leckwarnerbatterie eindeutig zu groß geraten. Sie verhindert mit Ihrer Größe, dass die Kamera im eingebauten Zustand nicht per USB mit dem Computer verbunden kann. Die Speicherkarte kann allerdings im eingebauten Zustand entnommen werden.
Insgesamt bin ich mit dem Hugyfot HFN D70 Gehäuse sehr zufrieden. Allerdings wäre ich noch glücklicher, wenn Hugyfot endlich eine Sportsucheroptik für mein Gehäuse anbieten würde!

My first impression of the housing is that it is very compact, although a little bigger than the Subal. The camera fits perfectly into the housing without any problem. The housing looks strong and beautiful (at least in my opinion) and, better of all, it has been working from the very first moment with no adjustments needed. It’s a real Hugy, even if this is a housing completely developed by Green Force, the Belgian company that bought Hugyfot to René Hugenschmidt.
The locking system is a little basic: just two screws. It's safe but rather annoying when you want to open the housing in a hurry. Anyway, it makes me feel confident. The D70 housing has controls for all the camera functions except the MF-AF switch (and cannot be ordered as an extra ...).
It is possible to switch lenses from the front of the housing through the port opening while the camera remains mounted in the housing. For lenses with zoom gears, using a lens removal tool is needed.
The Mode control dial has been moved to the back, but a small window with magnifying glass on the top allows the photographer to see where it is set.
The on-off switch is a lever switch. It is important to ensure that the camera is “on” and that the housing power switch lever is also correctly aligned by placing in the “on” position before inserting the camera into the front half of the housing for mounting.
The front control dial is NOT easily accessible with your fingers, which is a problem, especially when using gloves, and there is a good deal of rotating between F-stops (or speed, up to everybody). The rear control is excellent, big enough and in a very good position to be controlled by your thumb.
The shutter release is a real jewel, with a very good feel and very easy to work with. All the other push buttons are perfectly placed and work perfectly, so that all the D70 menu functions can be used properly.
The LCD screen is well shaded, which makes it easy to evaluate images.
So far, Hugyfot housings do not have magnified viewfinders.... and the standard viewfinder is not enough, at least in my opinion (please, note that I need to wear glasses, so my sight is not as good as I would like it to be). I’ve sent an e-mail to Hugyfot asking if they are going to produce a grand viewfinder and the answer was "yes, in the future....".... and nobody knows when the future will be here
This housing can be ordered with one or two strobe synch sockets (connected in parallel to the housing hotshoe) and with one or two strobe arm attachment points. On the other hand, the housing features a strobe attachment ball just on the top... In my opinion, useful only for modelling light but not for a real strobe. The balls feature ultralight size.
Lens ports and domes are acrylic and sustained by metallic barrel utilising a bayonet style fitting with an O-ring seal on the port barrel and are easily installed.
The moisture alarm is visual and acoustic and its battery is too big, so that you cannot connect the camera to the computer without unscrewing the camera from the housing. On the other hand, removing the memory card can be done while the camera remains mounted in the front half of the housing.
So, I feel very happy with my Hugyfot housing BUT I will feel even happier if they finally make a grand viewfinder!
